I love the story behind this song. The juicy bit is that he (Jason) was playing songwriting games with people and the rule was this: he had to use the word “sewing machine.” I’m sure there is more to it than just that, but I love the fact that such a great song can be spawned from such a random idea. Audiences especially get hooked on the idea that a songwriter is writing about their life, when in reality a lot of the best songwriting is born out of completely fictitious situations. I’ve found this song has meaning in more every day life situations than any of the other songs in this series. Who knows, maybe you’ll find some meaning to it too…
Learning this groove really separates the wheat from the chaff. It’s very repetitious, so there’s not a ton of material to learn. The trick is that you have to cultivate the discipline to coordinate the pattern for the first time. A lot of people would give up before they get it…but you won’t be that person. I have faith in you. My advice (as you will see in the video) is to take great care to break the picking pattern down into little pieces and patiently string it together. It’s a very special moment when you get it for the first time…I remember having a feeling that if I could do that, I could do anything. I would later find out I was wrong what I started learning “troubles will be gone,” but that’s another story…
